ABOUT BRACES

WHAT ARE BRACES?

Specialized dentists called orthodontists use braces to straighten teeth and improve the bite between the upper and lower jaw. Braces use attached brackets, bands around the molars and connecting wires to gently push your teeth into the desired placement.

TYPES OF BRACES

You have a choice between various types of braces. The traditional type are metal braces and wires, or you can choose clear ceramic braces that are less noticeable. Less common are lingual braces that go on the backside of the teeth as well as invisalign with clear aligners for a more discreet teeth straightening treatment.

COST OF BRACESS

The price of braces can vary because of factors like your orthodontist, the type of braces, your teeth and your age. You could expect to pay a range of $3,000 to $10,000, with the average cost falling at about $6,000.

PAYMENT OPTIONS FOR BRACES

You have options that could help with the cost of braces. Dental insurance may cover some of the cost. In many cases, the orthodontist will offer payment options, such as paying in full for a discount or setting up a payment plan. It’s also possible to get a bank loan.

DOES INSURANCE COVER BRACES?

Dental insurance plans often cover part of the cost of braces for children if the child has a medical need rather than a cosmetic one. However, dental insurance doesn’t tend to offer coverage for adults of 18 years and older.

BEFORE BRACES

WHO NEEDS BRACES?

Braces can create a straighter smile for cosmetic reasons. Yet they also have medical purposes, as crowded teeth and other issues can lead to cavities, gum disease, bite and jaw problems, and other concerns that impact your health.

HOW DOES BRACES WORKS?

The brackets and bands attached to the teeth are connected through a wire. The orthodontist gradually uses the wire to put pressure on the teeth, which encourages the teeth to move their position.

WHEN TO GET BRACES?

It’s recommended that a child has an orthodontic examination by age seven. The child may or may not need braces at that time. The timing will depend on your dental issues, so it’s best to ask a dentist or orthodontist.

WHEN TO SEE AN ORTHODONTIST

The recommendation for children is to see an orthodontist by the age of seven. As an adult, you can go if you think you might have an alignment problem or you want to improve your smile.

HOW TO FIND AN ORTHODONTIST

If your dental insurance covers orthodontic work, you’ll want to choose an orthodontist covered under your plan. Also, pick someone board-certified, and ask for recommendations from your dentist, friends and others. You can also search reviews online.

DURING BRACES

BRACES INITIAL EXAM

The first exam before you get braces is often free of charge and easy. It will answer questions you may have about your teeth placement, bite and dental health. Your orthodontist can provide a diagnosis and proposed treatment plan.

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT PLANS

The orthodontist will create a treatment plan before starting work. During a consultation, the orthodontist will give more detail on treatment options, potential risks and other factors after reviewing your lab models taken during a previous appointment.

PLACING THE BRACES

During placement, the orthodontist will prepare your teeth. He’ll put bonding cement on the back of the brackets and attach them to the teeth, put bands around the molars and then attach wire to connect each bracket and band.

SEPARATORS AND RUBBER BANDS

Separators are rubber bands that are flossed between the molars to create space for the bands. Separate rubber bands are wrapped on the brackets to better move the placement of the teeth.

BRACES ADJUSTMENT

Throughout the process of wearing braces, you return to the orthodontist for adjustments about every three to eight weeks. The orthodontist checks your progress and replaces weakened rubber bands. They may adjust your treatment plan if needed.

LIVING WITH BRACES

EATING WITH BRACES

It’s sometimes uncomfortable or painful to eat with braces. Orthodontist recommend you avoid hard and sticky foods. It can be helpful to eat more soft foods and to take precautions like cutting an apple instead of biting it directly.

BRUSHING WITH BRACES

It’s important to properly clean teeth and gums while you have braces. Gently brush your teeth with an angled brush, focusing on a few teeth at a time. Floss between the teeth to remove food. Also, get regular dental checkups.

BRACES PAIN

Braces can cause sore teeth as the teeth are gently pushed into a different placement, especially after you get them adjusted. Your orthodontist might recommend over-the-counter pain medication to help, especially before an adjustment appointment.

SPORT AND BRACES

You can still play sports, including contact sports, while you have braces. The key is to take precautions, which include wearing a mouthguard while playing. It’s best to choose an orthodontic mouthguard, which is larger than regular ones.

BRACES EMERGENCY

You may rarely have an orthodontic emergency while wearing braces. This could include broken braces, loose braces, a poking wire or a loose band. You could also have a dental injury. In cases like these, contact your orthodontist right away.

AFTER BRACES

REMOVING THE BRACES

At the end of your treatment, the orthodontist removes the braces. The brackets are removed by squeezing the base, which releases the bond material and the bracket. The orthodontist pulls off the molar bands, and removes adhesive from teeth.

RETAINER AFTER BRACES

After your braces are removed, you will wear a retainer. This is a removable piece that you wear sometimes to maintain the new placement of your teeth. There are different types, so it can vary by your case and orthodontist.

TYPE OF RETAINERS

Hawley retainers are pieces of acrylic molded to your mouth with a wire across the front of your teeth. Clear retainers are plastic trays that cover your teeth, while fixed retainers are attached to the inside of the teeth.

COST OF RETAINERS

Hawley retainers cost $150 to $300 each for upper or lower ones. Other kinds can cost different amounts. The cost is often included in the total price of getting braces, so it may not be an extra expense.

VIVERA RETAINERS

These retainers were made to go with Invisalign clear aligners that are an alternative to braces. These retainers are clear and molded to your teeth so you can wear them without them being noticeable.
